5th CYCLING AND SOCIETY RESEARCH GROUP SYMPOSIUM - Call for Abstracts
Monday 8th September 2008: Deadline July 11th
The 5th Cycling and Society Research Group symposium will be held on Monday 8th September 2008 at the Centre for Transport & Society, University of the West of England.
It is an opportunity for those interested in the broad range of cycling issues – academics, policy makers, decision makers and campaigners - to share their research, knowledge and experience.
This symposium series was launched in 2004 at Lancaster University, with subsequent meetings at the Universities of Cardiff (2005), Chester (2006) and at the offices of the Cyclist’s Touring Club (CTC) Guildford (2007). The symposia are linked to the Cycling and Society Research Group (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/cycling-and-society.html) whose members span many disciplines and approaches to the study of cycling. An edited collection of papers was launched at the CTC symposium in 2007 - Cycling and Society, eds. Horton, Rosen & Cox, Ashgate 2007 – and many of these papers were first presented at the Lancaster symposium.
Papers on any aspect of cycling research are welcome. Past symposia have included papers on:
cycling and social transformation;
gender; identity; image; fear;
history; policy; legal issues;
route choice modelling;
design; barriers to cycling;
contradictions in cycling statistics;
research methodologies;
innovation in the cycle industry;
and communication between cyclists and drivers.
Please send an abstract of up to 300 words by July 11th 2008 to Henrietta.Sherwin@uwe.ac.uk
Those wishing to participate in the symposium without presenting a paper are very welcome to attend. There will also be an
informal session for academic researchers on Tuesday 9th September in the morning. Further information on registering for the event on Monday 8th September will follow. If you need any further information please contact Henrietta.Sherwin@uwe.ac.uk Tel. 0117 328 3066

Tick Survey Launched As Climate Change Increases Risks Of Disease
Climate change is exposing more outdoor enthusiasts heading for activity holidays in Europe to a potentially fatal tick disease than ever, warn leading scientists.
Higher temperatures and more rainfall across central Europe are creating perfect conditions for ticks to thrive in countryside areas, according to the ISW, a group of experts investigating Tick Borne Encephalitis (TBE). “It is believed that the life cycle of ticks will increase in the next few years, and as a result the geographical distribution of ticks will expand and population density will rise,” said Professor Jochen Süss of the ISW.
Tick Alert, a campaign to raise awareness of tick disease has launched ‘Tick Watch 2008’ - the first-ever public survey about ticks in the UK and abroad – and is asking cyclists, ramblers, and outdoor pursuits lovers to take part (visit www.masta.com/tickalert and click on the link).
The survey aims to find out if ticks are spreading and becoming more common, if people have had problems with ticks on holidays in the UK or Europe and whether ticks are being spotted outside the main spring/summer tick season.
The number of TBE cases requiring hospital treatment in Europe rose to 13,000 last year, a 30% increase on 2006. Every year in the UK up to 3,000 people suffer a tick infection and the Health Protection Agency reports that the number of laboratory-confirmed cases of Lyme disease in England and Wales almost trebled to 768 in 2006. Scotland alone has seen a tenfold increase in numbers over the last decade with 177 cases reported in 2006.
