REGULAR EVENTS

Get up and go!!

Youngsters across the district now have something to get out of bed for on a Saturday morning.

The Salt Ayre Cog Set - Lancaster’s cycling club for young people - will be recommencing their weekly sessions on Saturday 29 March.  The club, formerly known as Go-Ride, is suitable for all youngsters between the ages of eight and 16.

For the price of a can of fizzy pop and a chocolate bar, children can keep fit and healthy in a safe environment.  The sessions will focus on essential bike handling skills for riding both on and off road.

Everyone is welcome, whether new to cycling or experienced in the sport.  The sessions start at 10am and last for two hours.  All you need is a working bike and a helmet.  Children younger than eight are able to take part as long as parents accompany them for the session.

Based at the Salt Ayre cycle racing circuit, the club is run by qualified coaches.  The Salt Ayre Cog Set has also recently been affiliated to British Cycling, the sports awarding authority.

Last year the club proved hugely popular with around 25 children regularly turning up each Saturday morning.  They were able to try their hand at mountain biking, stunt riding and track riding with a few youngsters even gaining some racing experience against other North West riders.

For more information on the Salt Ayre Cog Set club visit the interactive website at www.go-ride.org.uk or contact coach Paul Andrews on 01524 36777 or go to http://www.celebratingcycling.org/more_info.asp?current_id=219

"Healthy Wheels"   EVERY FRIDAY  (Please note there will not be a session on Friday 21st March)

Healthy Wheels our new drop in cycling sessions for those seeking a healthier lifestyle in 2008 start on Friday January 18.  So whether you’re trying to beat the bulge or just fancy a leisurely ride, why not scoot along to Salt Ayre Sports Centre on Friday mornings.

The free rides start at 11am, last for an hour and are not only a great way to keep fit and healthy but also a chance to meet new friends. The sessions can help returning cyclists or those who lack that bit of confidence to get back on their bikes. Instructors will be on hand to offer advice and support to riders.

Cyclists should bring their own bikes although there is a limited supply available for hire from Salt Ayre. Those wishing to hire a bike should contact the CDT Team in advance - see contact details below.

There’s no need to book - just turn up!

For more information please contact the CDT Team on 01524 582392 / 582086 or celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk

BIKE IT UPDATE

Numbers of cyclists at the Bike It schools are increasing as the weather improves.   All the new Primary Schools have now had launch events with Dr Bike, bike breakfasts, cycle skills, shelter launches, poster competitions and more…  Winter activities have included maintenance classes and lessons about being seen.

Bikeability Training

Most Bike it schools from this and last year are doing Bikeability (www.bikeability.org.uk) cycle training funded by the CDT project and delivered by Pedal Power.  Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency for the 21st century’ and includes on road training to prepare the pupils for cycling in today’s traffic.  Pupils receive certificates and badges.

 Cycle Round the World

6 Bike It Primary Schools in Lancaster and Morecambe are racing to cycle around the world ('virtually').

You can see what they're doing here www.celebratingcycling.org/more_info.asp?current_id=236 and where they've got to here www.celebratingcycling.org/more_info.asp?current_id=282.

Skerton High are also having their own race – lower school vs. higher school vs.. staff!

Cycle Storage

Heysham High, Mossgate and Skerton High schools all now have new cycle shelters funded by their School Travel Plan grants, CDT funding and a Sustrans grant (Skerton only).

Skerton High have done lots of other cycle promotion activities such as maintenance courses and cycle to school days and we are hoping to get funding for a bike loan scheme at the school to allow more pupils to benefit and further extend the cycle storage.

Heysham High already has high numbers of cyclists but hope to increase this and fill their new huge cycle shelters [for 100 pupil and 20 staff bikes!] They will be officially launching their project in April with afternoons devoted to cycling for all year 7’s.  Activities will include shows from trials cyclist Ben Slinger, Go-Ride cycle skills training, bike rides, and bike maintenance.

Tour d’Afrique

The two fastest ‘round the world’ schools from last year’s competition are now going to join (and compete against) around 100 Bike It schools across the country in the ‘Tour d’Afrique’ virtual cycle race.

Good luck to Ellel St John’s and Moorside Primaries!

The fund will give small grants to fund projects and activities that directly lead to people taking part in sustained physical activity. The aim of the fund is to help remove the “barriers” which stop people being active.

Our Active Living Fund is programme to provide financial help to individuals and groups involved in making physical activity more affordable and more practical for members of their community. If you’re part of a local sporting or fitness organisation, why not see if you qualify for a grant?

Lancaster University - Cycle to Work Day

Over 90 members of staff managed to bag a free breakfast after pledging to cycle to work on the University’s Cycle to work day on March 11.

Breakfast on Cycle DayThe mass cycle ride to campus was one of the events planned for Lancaster University’s Cycle Day and in addition to a free breakfast, there were free bike checks and the chance to win £400 of prizes.

Travel and Environment Co-ordinator Philip Longton said: “This is a celebration of cycling to and from the University as a commute-to-work. We wanted to make this fun and interesting with these events to create even more enthusiasm and interest.”

All the events were provided as a partnership between Green Lancaster and the Cycling Demonstration Town project for Lancaster & Morecambe.

The numbers of staff cycling to work at the University is one of the highest in Lancashire at just over 13 per cent, while the numbers of students cycling to campus has doubled to over ten per cent in the past two years.

The events consisted of; a mass cycle ride to Campus. The first led cycle ride departed from the car park of Chancellors’ Wharf and followed the new University cycle route along the canal towpath. The second led cycle ride departed from the A6 on the edge of Greaves Park, just south  of the Pointer Roundabout; Free “Doctor Bike” bicycle checks and adjustments were offered by mechanic Colin Stones.

Cycling events and promotions were held in Alexandra Square and a selection of cycling information stalls were available as part of the University’s Cycle Day including a pedal-powered fruit smoothie maker.
