Cumbria County Council is entering a bid for Kendal to become a Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT) with Cycling England in 2008
Cycling England has proposed that a further 10 towns are awarded ‘Cycling Town’ status in 2008, subject to funding being confirmed by the Department of Transport. Following informal discussions with Cycling England it is proposed that a bid be submitted on behalf of Kendal (and the surrounding rural hinterland) once the completion is opened early in 2008. A successful bid will result in investment in cycling that would match the levels in North Europe.
Included in the bid will be the Kendal Cycle Network Action Plan, with £400,000 of improvement works, which has been accepted as part of the Kendal Transport Plan, together with a raft of educational and promotional activities aiming to increase the number of people cycling in the Kendal area by 100% by 2012. Lancaster became one of the first six Cycle Demonstration Towns and the Kendal bid will aim to build upon the city’s experiences. Links between the two would be central to the bid.
To achieve this goal, the County Council will work with as a wide a range of groups as possible. Can the South Lakes Group RSF give any help in both promoting the bid and the Cycle Demonstration Town project.
I can provide further information on Cycle Demonstration Towns if needed. Cycling England are currently finalising the bidding process and criteria, with an announcement expected early in 2008.
