SOCIAL RIDES
As you may be aware our CDT ride programme - Women on Wheels etc - has ended for this calendar year, and we're currently thinking about what sort of events and rides to arrange for next year.
However we are aware that perhaps there is a need for an informal cycling club in the local area - where people could get together socially for short - medium rides and explore the local area. This might not even take the form of a 'club' but perhaps people would just like to be put in touch with other cyclists who might want to meet new people, explore new routes, gain some confidence or just have fun.
Please let us know if you would like to be involved in this and how you would see it working for example an area on our website/messageboard for people to post requirements or we could facilitate something if there was the demand.
Thoughts welcome to celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk
LOCAL NETWORK IMPROVEMENTS
Lancaster Canal
Work is almost complete to improve the towpath between Aldcliffe Road and Ashton Road. Advisory cycle lanes will be added on Ashton Road to improve access to Ashford Road, signing will be provided to the existing University route from Hala. This will provide an alternative route to South Lancaster and the University. (Negotiations are still taking place to allow cycling through the Haverbreaks Estate).
Westgate
Work is now complete on converting footways to shared use between White Lund Rd and Langridge Way on the southern side of Westgate (funded by planning gain from the new Lidl store).
The final stage of the project - conversion of footways to shared use on the northern side of Westgate, between Altham Road and the Lancaster to Morecambe Greenway, will start during the week commencing 5th November.
FREE TRAINING
Do you know someone who would benefit from some cycle training - perhaps a colleague, a partner or even yourself?
During November we are offering local residents a free 1-2-1 session with one of our qualified instructors. These can take place when and where you want. Sessions can cover anything from getting started, to gaining confidence on local roads.
For more information or to arrange a session please email us at celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk or call on 582392 / 582086

The Local Network Fund for Children and Young People
The Fund supports small voluntary and community groups to improve outcomes and opportunities for children and young people aged 0-19.

The Vision Board - Transport Strategy
The Lancaster and Morecambe Vision Board are
consulting about transport strategy and they’d like to hear your views.
There will be staffed exhibitions in St Nicolas Arcade on Saturday 3 November (9am – 5.30pm) and unstaffed in Lancaster and Morecambe Libraries from Monday 22 October - Saturday 3 November.
A public exhibition will also be displayed in University House foyer (Lancaster University) from Monday 22nd October to Saturday 3rd November.
Faber Maunsell has been commissioned by Lancaster & Morecambe Vision and Lancashire County Council to develop this strategy with a key objective of looking at ways of ensuring that the strategic and local transport network fully supports the wider regeneration and vision for the area. The exhibition will offer opportunity to gain an understanding of the proposed transport vision for the area and to give feedback on the key themes. For further information on the strategy see http://www.l-m-vision.org/reports/transportstrategy/
Welcoming Walkers & Cyclists
A one day training course designed to help businesses understand how they can provide a warm welcome and appropriate levels of service to attract walking and cycling visitor markets.
The outdoor recreational market is one of the fastest expanding tourism sectors, with walking and cycling being two of its most popular activities. Walking and cycling generate almost £1 billion within the UK and spend is increasing year on year. Lancashire is in an excellent position to take advantage of this, with an exceptional network of footpaths, cycle routes and beautiful countryside. More and more tourism businesses, especially in rural areas, are realising the potential benefits of opening their door to walkers and cyclists. Yet walkers and cyclists may feel they are making unreasonable demands or inconveniencing their hosts by asking for a packed lunch, somewhere to store dry boots, or store a bicycle.
With this in mind the Lancashire Rural Tourism Initiative has developed a one day course offering an insight into how accommodation providers can tailor their operation to profit from this rapidly growing sector. By identifying the particular requirements of walkers and cyclists, this course provides easy steps to make their stay more enjoyable and satisfying. In particular the course will prepare serviced accommodation operators to apply for the national Walkers and Cyclists Charter Mark.
Course Content:
Understanding the Visitor Experience for Walkers and Cyclists Tourism in the Countryside
The Walking and Cycling Market Your Own Business Profile
The Local Walking and Cycling Product Attracting Walkers and Cyclists
Developing the Product Marketing and Advertising Options
The training day is designed to be both informative and enjoyable and is endorsed by the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board Training Team who have many years experience in delivering the Welcome to Excellence customer care training programmes. On completion of the course delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.
