WHAT could be nicer than a cycle ride along the River Lune on a crisp autumn morning?

Perhaps the added incentive that you will be raising money for a life-saving unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary will make it even better.....

On Sunday, October 7, a nine-mile cycle ride is planned from Green Ayre (near Sainsbury’s) to the Crook o’Lune in aid of the Coronary Care Appeal.  The Lancaster Guardian has teamed up with the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Lancaster City Council to hold the fundraising event along the cycle path.

All cash raised will be donated to the Coronary Care Appeal.  Already you have raised £540,000 (with thanks to a large donation from Lancaster charity Heart Concern) towards the Coronary Care Appeal - now we’ve just got another £40,000 to go.  And we’re hoping the sponsored bike ride will raise thousands towards the final target.

Registration fee for the event is £5 and we also hope you will raise as much money as possible through sponsorship. Under 11s go free.  For a registration pack or to get further details ring 01524 583030.

The person who raises the most sponsorship will also win a brand new bike.  Dynostart in Carnforth have donated the bike as a prize to encourage everyone to raise as much money as possible.

What will the money will be spent on?

The £540,000 you have raised for the Coronary Care Appeal is being used to create a new treatment room and facilities in the main Centenary Building at the hospital. Askam Construction has been appointed to create a new treatment room and facilities in the existing cardiac unit.

The new unit which will open in December will improve access for emergency patients being admitted via the Accident and Emergency department. The new cardiac unit will also have larger treatment and patient areas, including an additional coronary care bed.

Dr Peter Clarkson, consultant cardiologist and chair of the fundraising appeal said: “This is a very exciting time, seeing the dream we have had for so long starting to be turned into reality and knowing that by the end of this year we will have moved into a fantastic new unit. We have not quite reached the appeal total required but I am hopeful that with the ongoing support of the public this will be achieved soon”.
