BIKE IT NEWS

Cycle shelters in Bike It schools are filling up thanks to the good weather and Bike It promotional activities.  There have been a number of requests about extending storage facilities in the last few days!  Three schools have now made it around the world and will be having Ben Slinger shows over the next few weeks - congratulations to Grosvenor Park Primary, Willow Lane Primary and Skerton Primary.

Bike It champion Mrs Barbara White  retired as the head of Bike It School Ellel St John’s at the end of last term.  On her last day pupils were encouraged to cycle in, to enjoy a Bike It breakfast and to join in cycle skills sessions on the playground.  She is pictured on her new bike, a leaving present from staff and parents so that she can go on cycle rides with her grandson in her retirement.

All year 7’s at Heysham High School dropped classes for an afternoon to launch Bike It and their new bike shelter.  The biggest Bike It shelters yet part funded by the CDT project will take 100 pupils bikes and 20 staff bikes.  Pupils enjoyed an opening ceremony, an amazing show by 3 times junior world champion trials cyclist Ben Slinger and his colleague Danny, followed by a range of activities such as a cycle ride along the prom, British Cycling Go-Ride skills sessions, dustcap making and maintenance workshops.

Youngsters take the smooth route to school

A revamped cyclepath is giving youngsters at three Lancaster schools a safe and smooth journey to school.

As part of Lancaster City Council’s Cycling Demonstration Town (CDT) Project, improvements have been carried out to the cycle/footpath which links the Hala estate to the gates of Sustrans Bike It Schools, St. Bernadette's and Moorside Primary Schools and to Stepping Stones School on Bowerham Road.

Before the works were undertaken, this already popular shortcut from Gressingham Drive to Bowerham Road, bordered on one side by woodland, was regarded by residents to be dark, muddy and unsafe. The improvements included reconstruction and widening of the path, replacement and realignment of the school boundary fence, street lighting and signage.  A small number of trees and some undergrowth had to be removed from the woodland areas but a compensatory planting/landscaping scheme is proposed for the autumn.

The project also included the conversion of the Bowerham Road footway to 'shared use' so that pedestrians and cyclists can access the schools and use the path to Barton Road more safely. As a result of the work, the path is much more attractive and welcoming and is providing an improved sense of safety which should, in the long term, encourage greater use of it by both pedestrians and cyclists.

The new improved path will be officially opened by Coun Eileen Blamire on Friday, May 23 at 3.30pm.

At the entrance to cycle/footpath situated next to Stepping Stones School on Bowerham Road, Lancaster.  Pupils and teachers from Moorside and St. Bernadette's Primary Schools, representatives of Lancaster City Council's (CDT) Team, Councillor Eileen Blamire and Sustrans Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford officially open the improved cyclepath/footpath link to their schools.

Celebrations continue after the event with a guided family bike ride to Lancaster University at 3.45pm.  Pupils from Moorside School will be riding 'blinged' up bikes using recyclable materials after a day of celebrating design and technology.

WOMEN & CYCLING

If you haven't already done so please take a moment to complete this survey - Thanks.

www.celebratingcycling.org/images/downloads/women_cycling.htm

According to the last census (2001) only around 2% of women in the Lancaster district regularly used a bicycle to get to work.

This survey is just the first step in finding out why women choose to cycle (or not) and what would help to increase cycling levels for all types of journeys.
