CELEBRATING CYCLING JUNE / JULY EVENTS  (UPDATED)

Sunday June 29 (This Sunday) 10am

British Bike Trial Championship (Round 2)

Half Moon Bay, Heysham

This Sunday a round of the British Biketrial Championships will be held for the first time in the North West.  Britain's best riders will compete in Round 2 of the Championships at Half Moon Bay, Heysham.

Local rider Ben Slinger will be competing on home territory for a place on the podium having finished 3rd in the 1st round at Devon in April. Not a bad result considering he has only recently got back on his bike following a 2 month absence due to an ankle injury...

Trials competitions can take place on natural or man made sections.  Riders have a time limit of 2 minutes in which they must complete obstacles and must not touch the ground with their feet in order to avoid any penalties. There are two types of bikes 20” wheels and 26” wheels. There are two laps of 10 sections and the competition kicks off at 10am and lasts around 4 hours to complete the course. There are different classes which cater for riders age and ability.

The 3rd Round will be held in Bacup, Lancashire on July 13 with the 4th and final Round in Surrey in September.

Saturday 5th July 10am

Official opening of the improved cycle circuit at Salt Ayre

Salt Ayre Sports Centre’s newly improved cycling circuit will officially open to the public on July 5 at 10am.

Lancaster City Council secured £160,000 to develop the 1,300 metre cycling track, which was in a poor state of repair, to transform it into something fit for potential Olympic champions.  And to prove that claim Olympic gold medallists Jason Queally and Bradley Wiggins will be joining in the celebrations by officially cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

One of only a small number of dedicated outside circuits in the country, improvements to the circuit have included widening and resurfacing works, improved signage and a cycle skills area.    As well as the chance to meet two Olympic champions, the opening celebrations will include a number of cycling related activities for all ages to enjoy. Anyone wishing to join in the fun is encouraged to come on their bikes.

VELO-CITY

This is a youth-led project aimed at encouraging young people between 16 and 25 years old to create their own volunteering opportunities in the Lancaster area and surrounding district, under the umbrella themes of sustainable transport, bikes, recycling, the environment, computers, and sound activities for the young generation.

Young people are asked to contact Pedal Power if they have an interest in sustainable transport, cycling, recycling and other environmental issues and any ideas for projects that would benefit their community and other young people that they would like to turn into reality.  Their projects can be based on actual cycling or computers, or take aspects of either and transform them into something else, recycled art projects, construction or design, events or promotions that raise awareness and create positive opportunities for other young people.

Based at Pedal Power and part of the Furniture Matters family, VELO-CITY has it’s own identity and momentum.  Our launch event will took place early June at Lancaster & Morecambe College.  The V team are Anna Redfearn Volunteer Co-ordinator, Danny Smith Cycle Instructor/Trainer, Darren Clemmy Cycle   Mechanic/Trainer and Ellie Barnes Support Worker – with a further outreach youth worker post.

CHANGE YOUR WORLD WEEK

Change Your World logo

Do you remember being free range as a kid? Playing outside and getting around under your own steam? It seems kids today are missing out and the huge amount of traffic on our streets is partly to blame.

It doesn’t have to be like this. By taking small steps together we can make a big change happen. All we’re asking is that you swap just one car trip between 30 June - 5 July and walk, cycle, use public transport or car-share instead. Amazingly, if we all drove just one less journey a week, together we’d reduce car traffic by 10%.

So go on give it a go!  Swap just one car trip between 30 June-5 July and Change Your World. Walk, cycle, use public transport or stay home instead, but join in and help us reduce car traffic by 10%.

Take your first step now at www.changeyourworld.org.uk and for a chance to win great family prizes. Change Your World is run by Sustrans. To find out more visit www.sustrans.org.uk.
