CYCLING EXHIBITION
In partnership with Lancaster City Museum we are holding an exhibition on all things cycling next year. We are interested in hearing from you if you have any cycling memorabilia that may be of value to this exhibition (and that you would be willing to loan January - April 2009). Please email us at celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk with a brief description of your item(s) and we will get back to you.
NETWORK NEWS
Next week sees the start of work to convert the footpath on Morecambe Road between Ovangle Rd and Heysham bypass roundabouts to shared use (College side). This conversion will continue into the College grounds.
This work should take around 4/5 weeks.
On completion of the above scheme, work will then start on a contraflow on Brook Street, Lancaster (linking Carr House Lane / Dallas Road to Aldcliffe Road). It is hoped that the following scheme will be the connection of Morecambe Promenade to Lancaster Canal via Rushley Drive, Hest Bank in September/October.
Parking
We are still keen to install more parking in the area - in particular in and around Lancaster city centre. As such we are still looking at ways of introducing secure parking be it secure compounds, lockers or a cycling hub. If you have not already completed our short survey on secure cycle parking you can do so by clicking here

Bike4Bike
On Thursday 21st August 2008, Ian Johnston will start his cycle tour of EVERY stage of the 2008 Tour de France cycle race (not whilst the main event is on!). That’s an incredible 3,558 kilometres or 2,223 miles, over 19 high mountain passes through the Pyrenees and the Alps! Yes, that’s an average 100 miles a day starting from Brest in Brittany to Paris in 21 days!
Ian wants your support to raise £11,000 to fund two very special bicycles that will enable disabled children from Alexandra House in Lancaster, to experience the joys of cycling - speed and the feel of the wind in their faces, as they are pedalled by an able bodied cyclist.

East Coast Epic Adventure!
Retired local Police Officer and keen cyclist, Andy Perry, is hitting the road next month to wheel his way down the USA’s east coast.
A Lancaster resident for over 30 years, Andy is looking forward to meeting many more Lancastrians on his epic ride but can expect a rather different local accent as his route passes through Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Beginning in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and ending in Jacksonville, Florida, Andy will cycle an impressive 1,683 miles over 22 days.
Last year Andy cycled coast to coast across the USA and decided to relive his American adventure this year raising valuable funds for local charity CancerCare, one of the UK’s largest local cancer support charities, dedicated to providing supportive care to more than 1500 people in the Morecambe Bay area each year. Facing Cancer, whether as a patient, carer or member of the family, is almost always a life changing experience. CancerCare aims to work with people as they come to terms with and manage these changes, by providing emotional, social, and psychological support, together with relevant information and practical assistance, completely free of charge.
Andy selected CancerCare as the beneficiary of his fundraising efforts as, he says, “many of my friends have been affected by cancer. I know of a good half a dozen people who would have loved to do something like this ride but they are no longer with us. I have seen what this dreadful disease can do and I felt inspired to do what I could to help”.
Andy’s fundraising target is £2,500 and, if you would like to help him reach this goal, you can do so by donating online at www.justgiving.com/andrewjperry or by sending a cheque payable to ‘CancerCare’ to Andy’s East Coast Advenure, CancerCare, Slynedales, Lancaster LA2 6ST. You can also follow his progress online from 14th August via Andy’s daily blog, details of which will be available shortly from Andy himself or from CancerCare’s fundraising office.
