NETWORK NEWS

 

Work has recently been completed outside of Lancaster & Morecambe College and on Brook Street, Lancaster.

 

The footpath on Morecambe Road between Ovangle Rd and Heysham bypass roundabouts has been converted to shared use (College side).  This conversion continues into the College grounds.

A contraflow has been installed on Brook Street, Lancaster - linking Carr House Lane / Dallas Road to Aldcliffe Road.

Lancashire County Council have recently installed ASL's at the junction of Westgate and Northgate as part of a Pedestrian Safety scheme - all the crossing points have been upgraded to Toucans.

Forthcoming Work:

- Advanced Stop Lines (ASLs) on Scotforth Road, Lancaster

- Conversion of footways on Caton Road to shared use

- Connection of Morecambe Promenade to Lancaster Canal via Rushley Drive, Hest Bank

Rivers & Villages

Sunday October 5  [THIS SUNDAY]

Meet Millennium Bridge (by the Quay Road) at 11am

A circular ride through the lanes and byways of the district.

Calling at Conder Green, Galgate and Caton.  This ride involves both on and off road riding (as well as a few hills).

Approximately 20 miles.  Please ensure you bring water and snacks/lunch.

Women's Open Evening @ Leisure Lakes

Thursday 9th October

Leisure Lakes, Penny Street.  6 - 8pm

Come along and meet the staff. Get advice on the right bike for you, clothing, accessories etc. Check out bikes for 2009.

Birding by Bike

Sunday October 19th

Meet at Millennium Bridge (Quay Road) at 11am

After the success of April's Birding by Bike we thought we would give local nature enthusiasts another chance to explore the wildlife of the River Lune.Autumn sees the return of thousands of waders and wildfowl to our estuaries and shores from their Arctic breeding grounds and we shall be looking out for some of these newly arrived migratory species.

Birds of prey may also be evident as they hunt over over the marshes and we will hope to see peregrine falcon, merlin and sparrowhawk. Recently arrived groups of fieldfare and redwing should also be in evidence along with winter finch flocks.  Don't forget your binoculars!

Learn to Cycle!

 

Wednesday 29th

 

10.00 - 12;00  & 13.00 - 15.00

 

Thursday 30-10-08               

 

13.00 - 15.00

 

This course is aimed at children who use stabilisers or cannot yet ride.  Pedals (and stabilisers) will be removed from the bikes so that the children can learn to balance before they progress to pedalling.  Please bring a roadworthy bike and suitable clothes for being outdoors.  Children must be accompanied by an adult and the adults may be asked to assist.

 

Cycle skills

 

Thursday 30th              

 

10.00 - 12.00

 

Cycle skills for ages 10-13.  This course will be all off road.  Participants will practice bike handling skills to prepare them for riding on the road.  It will cover National Standards level 1 and those who pass will receive a certificate.  It is open to all abilities.

Friday 31st                    

 

10.00 - 12.00

 

Cycle skills for ages 6 -9.  This course will be all off road.  It is open to all abilities and will be lots of fun.  Children under 8 should be accompanied by an adult.

 

On road cycle skills and bike ride!

 

Friday 31st                 

 

13.00 – 16.00                          

 

On road cycle skills and a bike ride for ages 10-13.  Children should have completed the off road cycle skills course before taking part in this on road cycling activity. It will cover some of National Standards level 2.  Please bring some money or a snack for the snack stop.

 

All courses cost £5 and are held at Salt Ayre.

Please bring a roadworthy bike and suitable clothes for being outdoors.

Lancaster holds its first ever Eco Festival – The One Planet Festival

 

The One Planet Festival will highlight issues surrounding climate change, celebrate the diverse culture, produce and innovations of the north Lancashire area, and aims to inspire practical action to reduce our environmental footprint.

 

Co-ordinated by Lancaster's climate change and energy awareness organisation, LESS (Local and Effective Sustainable Solutions), the One Planet Festival will feature a Sustainability Expo showcasing renewable energy technologies, sustainable products, services and projects. Other festival events include ‘Green Screen’, an environment themed film festival at The Dukes Cinema, carbon neutral and bicycle-powered music concerts at venues around the city and a series of talks and workshops addressing the challenge of climate change and offering practical solutions, headlined by climate change guru and author George Marshall with his Carbon Detox cabaret.

 

The One Planet Festival runs in Lancaster, Lancashire, from 9-12th October 2008. The Sustainability Expo is on Saturday 11 October from 10-4pm at Lancaster Town Hall. George Marshall stars in Carbon Detox, the world’s first stand-up climate change show at the Dukes Theatre on Sat 11 October at 8.30pm. Tickets are £5 / £4.
