Go Ride

Cog Set's new season recommences at Salt Ayre on Sat 28th March 10am

The Salt Ayre Cog Set, Lancaster’s cycling club for young people, will be recommencing their weekly sessions on Saturday 28 March 2008.  The club, formerly known as Go-Ride, is suitable for all youngsters between the ages of eight and 16.

For the price of a can of fizzy pop and a chocolate bar, children can keep fit and healthy in a safe environment.  The sessions will focus on essential bike handling skills for riding both on and off road.

Everyone is welcome, whether new to cycling or experienced in the sport.  The sessions start at 10am and last for two hours.  All you need is a working bike and a helmet.  Children younger than eight are able to take part as long as parents accompany them for the session.

Based at the Salt Ayre cycle racing circuit, the club is run by qualified coaches.  The Salt Ayre Cog Set has also recently been affiliated to British Cycling, the sports awarding authority.

Bike It ‘Round the World’

The Bike It ‘Round the World’ race that begun in Lancaster has now been taken up by Sustrans Bike It Officers and schools nationally following it’s success in increasing cycle journeys to school in the past 2 years.  This year 6 of our local Bike It schools are racing not only each other but over 140 Bike It schools from across England!

Over the next month the pupils will be following in the footsteps of the cycling adventurer Alastair Humphreys who spent four years cycling 46,000 miles around the world.  Each time a pupil, parent or staff member cycles to school, miles will be added on to their school’s journey around the world.  19 Sustrans Bike It Officers are aiming to get over 20,000 children cycling to and from school through this challenge.

Alastair came and launched the project in the 4 year 1 Bike It Primary Schools schools; Bolton-le-Sands (pictured), Torrisholme, Ryelands and St Mary’s.  Pupils were inspired by pictures and tales of his adventure.  The first of these schools to make it round the world will win a show from the amazing trials cyclist Ben Slinger (pictured).

Grosvenor Park and Moorside Primary Schools have completed the challenge in previous years but are taking the opportunity to compete nationally this year with a chance of winning £1000!  Grosvenor Park got off to a fantastic start with 62 cyclists on their first day!

Good luck to All!

TV comedian will bike on UK tour

Dave Gorman's 'Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up' tour will visit 30-seat village halls as well as 2000-seat theatres, and all across the UK.  Five years after he last toured the UK, the UK comedian famous for his 'Genius' series on Radio 4, will be embarking on pedal-powered stand-up comedy tour.

'Dave Gorman:Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up' will see the comedian covering the extremes of the British mainland as he travels from this land's southernmost point to its northernmost tip, taking in the most easterly and westerly points along the way.  Gorman will be performing each night of the journey. He'll be performing in a barn, hotel function rooms and a railway dining car.  He's 38 and, he says, "not especially fit," although he Twitters about cycling in London.
