 Bike Week 2009

It was raining so it must have been Bike to Work Day!

However we still managed to give away around 130 breakfasts between 0645 and 0900 on Wednesday - we even managed to stay dry for around 45 minutes.

It was great to see so many people out on their bikes - we spoke to people from at least twenty different workplaces.

 Thanks to everyone who took part in one of our Bike Week events.

LOCAL INFORMATION / NEWS

Bring your bike to Jason

If you cycle up to Williamson Park to see Jason and the Argonauts this year, The Dukes will give you a special money off voucher for their new production Of Mice and Men.

The Dukes walkabout theatre in Williamson Park is heading to Ancient Greece this year for a magical, mythical adventure. As you walk through the iconic dells, lakes and gorges – you’ll take to the high seas, climb Mount Olympus and join Jason as he faces his fiercest enemies. If you take the bike up (or down) the hill to the Park this year, you’ll be given a special bonus money off voucher for a future show. All you need to do is:

   *

      Buy your tickets as normal from The Dukes Box Office on 01524 598500, www.dukes-lancaster.org or at The Dukes, Moor Lane, Lancaster

   *

     On the night of the performance, take your ticket to the temporary Box Office on the Wyresdale Road entrance of Williamson Park (bike racks are situated in the Wyresdale Road car park)

   *

     Quote “Lancaster Cyclist Offer” and show them some evidence that you haven’t cheated (a bike lock, helmet or a cycle bag is perfect)

   *

     Collect your voucher for Of Mice and Men to be redeemed at a later date

There are only a limited number of vouchers per performance, so try to get up to the Park early to ensure you get yours!

Cycling Cash Boost

Twelve local groups are to share a £10,000 bonanza in a bid to encourage more people to get on their bikes. Earlier this year, Lancaster City Council and partners asked organisations to come forward who could prove they could encourage more local people to give cycling a go.  Grants of up to £1,200 were allocated to the following groups:

   * Ryelands Primary School

   * Cog Set

   * Colt

   * Moorside Primary School

   * Langley House Trust

   * Morecambe Road School

   * West End Primary School

   * Morecambe Foyer

   * Loyne Specialist School

   * Coronary Coasters Cycling Group

   * Sunshine Cycle Hire

   * Cycleability

Katrina Barton an independent travel trainer who works with young people with a range of learning difficulties at Loyne Specialist School said:

"The school is delighted to have been successful in their application for funding. This will enable it to purchase bikes and equipment for both staff and students to access. In the school’s further education unit, a number of students are being offered independent travel training. The funding will assist trainers to ‘shadow’ bus travel by bike until the student becomes familiar with their journey to school.  As many students are also keen to travel to school by bike, the project will initiate safety and familiarisation of their route until the student is able to complete the journey independently."

Cafe Stops

We would like to list cycle friendly cafes, pubs etc somewhere on our website.

If you would like to recommend anywhere please send us details including where possible their address, website etc. A sentence or two about why you are recommending them, would also be handy.

Short Cycle Rides

Posted on Messageboard June 13

"Hi, is there anyone living in or around the HEYSHAM area who's interested in SHORT cycle rides?

I'm disabled and also new to cycling so can't ride very far or fast. I thought it might be a nice idea to form a friendly, local group for people who lack confidence on a bike, are disabled or want to loose weight etc, (I'm all three!!), and only want to attempt short, local, rides.

If you are interested, or know anyone else who might be, please text me on 07855 704655 with your details.

Thanks Jane"

OTHER INFORMATION / NEWS

Cycling gets safer the more cyclists there are

That's the message of CTC's Safety in Numbers campaign which explains that the more people cycle, the safer it is for each individual cyclist. Possible reasons for the "Safety in numbers" effect are:

   * Drivers are more aware of cyclists

   * Drivers are more likely to be cyclists themselves

   * There is greater political will to improve cycling conditions

We want to halve the risk of cycling by doubling the numbers.The Government has already adopted a target to halve the risks of cycling in its draft Road Safety Strategy, A Safer Way.  This is exactly what CTC proposed in our "New Vision for Cycling".

However, apart from some welcome proposals to introduce more 20mph zones and limits, the draft Strategy says little about how they will achieve this target. We believe the best way is to double the levels of cycling.  This will benefit our streets, our health, our communities and the environment, as well as improving safety for all road users.
